I wanted to add: I wasn't aware that Bari Weiss recently became a mom. So it could simply be that she respects Oster's parenting advice and wanted to do a show with her.
Gross! This makes me sad but I am glad I know this so I can unsubscribe from all things Emily Oster. Anyone who is good pals with someone who happily identifies as an “unhinged Zionist” is not someone who gets my money or my views.
You are free to do as you please! But the post was meant to fight against this kind of logic of dismissal just because someone associates with someone who has ideas different from your own.
To me dismissal implies that it’s casual decision. It’s not, she is supporting something I find very deeply disturbing and believe is immoral (the war in Gaza) as well as some political positions domestically that I believe are harmful. Not giving someone power via money and views because you disagree with their thinking in a deep and consistent way is justified and logical in my opinion.
I fully agree with your conclusion here that you don't have to agree with everything a media outlet or person says to get value from their content. The fact that so many lefties are "cancelling" their trust in someone based on their partnership with a media outlet that publishes SOME things they disagree with is a sign of intellectual immaturity. The left's requirement that everyone pass their purity test before listening to their perspective is why I don't identify as left anymore. Its lazy, reactive, black and white thinking that is doing nothing for our country, the world, or more specifically moms.
Absolutely agree. Honestly I used to be fully on board with cancel culture until I started trying to talk about controversial topics publicly and realized how easily you get crucified. But aren’t the controversial topics the ones worth talking about? And can’t we have the maturity to listen to one another without having a big emotional reaction (to be sure I am guilty of this too)? That’s the only way we will ever make progress and bridge the political divide!
Yes! I also was on board with this mindset and then realized I was being overly influenced by extreme voices online that were just being polarizing to gain likes and popularity. The internet has increased our exposure to so much but like you said, not increased our ability to talk or listen deeply to one another.
The Free Press used to be a lot better. In 2020, the heterodox track was less trodden and the original content was almost entirely Weiss' reporting. The peripheral characters in the FP universe really drove me away, though Moynihan has made an improvement on that front.
I have been enjoying your work! And thanks for your take on this.
Sounds like you have been following them for a while. I admit that I am newly aware of them. I don’t know their history. But as I said in the piece I do think they have an interesting fresh take on many topics. And I admire their fearlessness. But I also deeply disagree with a lot of it.
Thank you for tackling this. Emily Oster got me through pregnancy, and I agree that her analysis and breakdown of the studies was incredibly useful. I haven't listened to the podcast, but am certainly intrigued now. That being said, her association with The Free Press is also concerning, but does not negate the good she has done. And you're right, being roasted never makes anyone feel good and just pushes them away.
I had this EXACT discussion on my mom discord the other day— lots of wanting to toss out Oster for this partnership. I get that there can be a slippery slope and who we partner with matters, but IMO Oster has earned some trust and i also trust my own reading/listening comprehension to judge what she puts out for its own sake. I am only a couple episodes into the podcast but I love it so far. Not because i agree with everything, but because I appreciate what she’s bringing to the table!
Exactly. She’s doing a good job of bringing multiple points of view to the table and having an interesting conversation on important and controversial topics. I respect that.
